Charitable Giving Trends
Improvement in the stock market may place you in a better position to make a charitable gift.
While there are always numerous ways to make gifts, we are watching the following trends:
- Gifts of real estate and tangible personal property. You may be reluctant, in
times of a troubled economy, to make large outright gifts of cash or securities. One way
to simplify your life and plan for the next generation is by making gifts of property. In
addition to supporting MHDF, it may be more advantageous to utilize a charitable income tax
deduction rather than own property that must be managed and maintained.
- Charitable gift annuity. Many of you have recognized the strength of annuities as a
gift option. Annuities offer a high payout rate and an attractive charitable deduction.
Certificate of Deposit rates remain low, maintaining the popularity of charitable gift
annuities.
- Charitable lead annuity trusts. Donors in the $1 million-plus range find these gifts
attractive. As long as IRS discount rates remain low, and estate and gift taxes are maintained or
increase, lead trusts will remain the choice option for larger gifts.
- Retirement plan assets. Passage of the CARE Act, currently under consideration by
Congress, will provide you with a highly tax-efficient way to support MHDF's work. Even if this
legislation does not pass, bequests of retirement plan assets by death beneficiary designation
remains a good choice for charitable giving.
