Planned Giving

Welcome!

Welcome to Minnewaska Home Development Foundation's planned giving Web site. We created this site to provide information and options to show your support of our organization, through a planned gift.

So What is Planned Giving?
We view planned giving as a vehicle that enables you to make gifts of assets during your lifetime or through a will or testamentary instrument. This means the gift can be given now or later. The process of giving may require planning on your part, as well as involving your advisors and MHDF. Planned giving can also offer you increased tax benefits and may even return an income to you.

Some individuals see planned giving as "deferred giving," or making gifts that will be deferred until a later time. For example, you may name MHDF in your will but we would not realize the actual gift until your death.

Others enter into a simple agreement such as a charitable gift annuity to provide them or their named beneficiary with an income stream for life or a specified period.

For still others, planned giving takes highly technical forms involving complex trusts and/or tax techniques. An example of this form of planned giving is charitable remainder trusts.

Tax and financial planning considerations may certainly influence and size and timing of the gift, as well as possibly the type of asset contributed. We hope, however, that philanthropic intent is your primary motivator for making a planned gift - the desire to enrich the future of your community and our organizational efforts.

How Do We Use Planned Gifts?
We are working to develop an endowment fund. Generally, we invest the principal of an endowment gift and use the earnings or a portion of the earnings each year for specific purposes.

We feel endowments can be a significant source of revenue for Minnewaska Home Development Foundation's missions. Typically, an endowment should:

  • Increase unrestricted dollar availability
  • Provide fiscal stability and allow us to engage in long-term planning of programs and services
  • Fill the gap left by decreasing public monies and governmental support to continue to deliver the high-quality services our residents expect and need
  • Underwrite capital expansion and operational costs and help us increase efficiency

We hope you will investigate our Web site. We believe the information will be helpful as you consider future financial planning opportunities for your family and your charitable giving plan.
